Yangchuanosaurus: China's Allosaurus
Yangchuanosaurus shangyouensis is a large theropod dinosaur from the Late Jurassic of Sichuan, China:
- Size: 8-11 meters long, 3-4 meters tall, and 1.5-3 metric tons. Similar in size and ecological role to Allosaurus.
- Appearance: A robust, large-headed theropod with a deep skull, serrated teeth, and three-fingered hands. It looked like a larger, more heavily built version of Allosaurus.
- Classification: A metriacanthosaurid allosauroid — part of the same broad group as Allosaurus, but from a different branch that evolved in Asia.
- Time and place: Late Jurassic (160-155 million years ago) of the Sichuan Basin, China. Found in the famous Shaximiao Formation near Zigong.
- Top predator: Yangchuanosaurus was the apex predator of its ecosystem — the largest meat-eating dinosaur in Jurassic China.
- Fossil abundance: Yangchuanosaurus is known from many fossil specimens found in the Zigong area — including some very complete skeletons. It is one of the best-known Jurassic theropods from Asia.

Mamenchisaurus: The Longest-Necked Dinosaur
Mamenchisaurus is a sauropod dinosaur famous for having an incredibly long neck — one of the longest necks of any animal ever to live:
- Size: 15-26 meters long, depending on species. The neck alone could be up to 15 meters long — nearly half the total body length.
- The neck: Mamenchisaurus had 19 neck vertebrae — more than most sauropods. The neck was extremely long and relatively light, with highly pneumatic (hollow) bones.
- Tail: A very long, whip-like tail that was probably used as a counterbalance for the long neck and possibly for defense.
- Time and place: Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous (160-140 million years ago) of China. Found in several Chinese provinces including Sichuan, Xinjiang, and Gansu.
- Species: Several species of Mamenchisaurus are known — ranging from relatively modest 15-meter species to giant 25+ meter giants like Mamenchisaurus sinocanadorum.
- Feeding: Mamenchisaurus was a high browser — its long neck allowed it to reach high into conifer trees that other herbivores could not reach.
