Two Very Different Theropods

The dinosaur world is full of amazing predators, and not all of them look like T-Rex. Ceratosaurus and Suchomimus represent two very different branches of the theropod family tree — one a horned, compact predator from the Jurassic, the other a sail-backed, crocodile-snouted fish-eater from the Cretaceous. Both are fascinating in their own right and make excellent additions to dinosaur collections that want to go beyond the usual T-Rex and Velociraptor lineup.

Ceratosaurus: The Horned Jurassic Predator

Ceratosaurus nasicornis is one of the most distinctive theropods of the Late Jurassic:

  • Size: About 5.5-7 meters long, 2 meters tall, and 500-1000 kg. Smaller than Allosaurus but still a formidable predator.
  • The horns: A prominent horn on the nose (hence 'nasicornis') and two smaller horns above the eyes. These were probably for display and species recognition rather than combat.
  • Teeth and jaws: Long, blade-like teeth — more like a shark's teeth than the robust bone-crushing teeth of tyrannosaurs.
  • Arms: Four-fingered hands — a primitive feature compared to the three-fingered allosaurids and two-fingered tyrannosaurs.
  • Time and place: Late Jurassic (153-148 million years ago) of North America, Europe, and possibly Africa.
  • Ecology: Shared its environment with larger predators like Allosaurus and Torvosaurus. Ceratosaurus may have focused on different prey or habitats to avoid competition.

Suchomimus: The Crocodile-Snouted Fish-Eater

Suchomimus tenerensis is a spinosaurid theropod from the Early Cretaceous of Niger, with a crocodile-like skull adapted for fishing:

  • Size: About 9.5-11 meters long, 2.5-3.5 meters tall, and 2.5-4 metric tons. A large predator.
  • The snout: A long, narrow, crocodile-like snout filled with many small, conical teeth — perfect for catching and holding slippery fish.
  • Sail / hump: A low sail or hump along its back, supported by elongated vertebrae. Smaller than the sail of Spinosaurus but clearly present.
  • Thumb claw: A large, powerful claw on the thumb — possibly used for hooking fish, similar to the way grizzly bears catch salmon.
  • Diet: Primarily piscivorous (fish-eating), though it probably also hunted small to medium-sized prey and scavenged.
  • Discovery: Discovered in 1998 by an expedition led by famous paleontologist Paul Sereno. The name means 'crocodile mimic' — Suchomimus tenerensis = 'crocodile mimic from the TÊnÊrÊ Desert'.

Baryonyx: The Original Fishing Dinosaur

Suchomimus is closely related to Baryonyx walkeri from England — the first spinosaurid dinosaur discovered that clearly showed the fish-eating lifestyle:

  • Baryonyx was discovered in 1983 in a clay pit in Surrey, England.
  • The fossil included partially digested fish scales in the stomach region — direct evidence of a fish diet.
  • Baryonyx was smaller than Suchomimus — about 7.5-10m long.
  • The name means 'heavy claw' — referring to the massive thumb claw that was one of the first parts discovered.
  • Baryonyx and Suchomimus are close relatives within the spinosaurid family, both belonging to the subfamily Baryonychinae.

Ceratosaurus and Suchomimus/Baryonyx add real value to dinosaur collections:

  • The dinosaur stands at the water's edge, head lowered, watching the water.
  • Suddenly the head strikes downward into the water — a fast, precise strike like a heron or pelican.
  • The head comes back up, jaws snapping, with water dripping from the mouth and teeth.
  • The dinosaur tilts its head back and appears to swallow, then returns to watching the water.
  • Optional water effects: A water spray or splash effect at the moment of the strike dramatically enhances the illusion.
  • The thumb claw can also be used in the display — 'hooking' fish out of the water.

Ceratosaurus Movement and Display

Ceratosaurus has its own distinctive movements and display behaviors:

  • Horn display: The head tilts and turns to show off the nasal horn and brow horns — a display behavior similar to how horned mammals show their horns.
  • Head shaking: A distinctive side-to-side head shake — characteristic of predators that use slicing teeth to tear flesh.
  • Body posturing: Ceratosaurus stands tall and puffs out its chest in threat displays, making its horns as visible as possible.
  • Vocalization: Lower, guttural hisses and roars — different from the deeper roars of larger theropods.

  • River / swamp scene: Suchomimus or Baryonyx at the edge of a river or swamp — the classic spinosaurid environment.
