China's Classic Stegosaur
Stegosaurus is the most famous plated dinosaur, but it is far from the only one. China has a rich diversity of stegosaur dinosaurs, and Tuojiangosaurus is one of the best known. Discovered near Zigong in Sichuan Province, Tuojiangosaurus is a classic Chinese stegosaur with its own unique plate and spike arrangement. Tuojiangosaurus Biology
Tuojiangosaurus multispinus is a stegosaurid dinosaur from the Late Jurassic of China:
- Size: 6-7 meters long, 2-2.5 meters tall, and 1-2 metric tons. Medium-sized for a stegosaur — smaller than Stegosaurus but larger than Kentrosaurus.
- Plates: Two rows of tall, pointed, leaf-shaped plates running along its back. The plates are taller and more pointed than Stegosaurus plates, giving Tuojiangosaurus a more spiky silhouette.
- Tail spikes (thagomizer): At least three pairs of spikes on the end of its tail — more than Stegosaurus (which typically has two pairs). The name 'multispinus' means 'many spined'.
- Shoulder spikes: A pair of large spikes projecting from the shoulders — similar to Kentrosaurus but smaller.
- Time and place: Late Jurassic (160-155 million years ago) of Sichuan, China. From the same famous Shaximiao Formation as Yangchuanosaurus and Mamenchisaurus.
- Discovery: First discovered in 1974 during construction work near the town of Tuojiang. It was one of the first stegosaur dinosaurs discovered in China.
- Zigong Dinosaur Museum: A mounted skeleton of Tuojiangosaurus is one of the centerpieces of the Zigong Dinosaur Museum.
How Tuojiangosaurus Differs from Other Stegosaurs
Each stegosaur has its own unique plate and spike pattern:
- vs. Stegosaurus: Stegosaurus has larger, more rounded plates (especially in the mid-back) and typically two pairs of tail spikes. Tuojiangosaurus has taller, more pointed plates and more tail spikes.
- vs. Kentrosaurus: Kentrosaurus is smaller and has enormous shoulder spikes and plates that transition into spikes along the back. Tuojiangosaurus has a more consistent plate pattern along the back.
- vs. Dacentrurus: Dacentrurus (from Europe) has very large, thick plates and robust build. Tuojiangosaurus is more lightly built with taller, thinner plates.
- vs. Gigantspinosaurus: Gigantspinosaurus (also from China) has absolutely enormous shoulder spines — bigger than any other stegosaur. Tuojiangosaurus has more modest shoulder spikes.
- Every stegosaur species has a distinctive plate and spike arrangement — which strongly suggests the plates were primarily for species recognition and display.
Chinese Stegosaur Diversity
China has one of the most diverse stegosaur faunas in the world:
- Tuojiangosaurus: The classic Chinese stegosaur — the first one discovered and the most famous.
- Gigantspinosaurus: 'Giant-spined lizard' — known for its enormous shoulder spines, the largest of any stegosaur relative to body size.
- Chungkingosaurus: A smaller, more primitive stegosaur from China — with more rounded plates and a stockier build.
- Huayangosaurus: One of the earliest and most primitive stegosaurs — from the Middle Jurassic of China. Had both plates and spikes and flank armor.
- Wuerhosaurus: One of the last surviving stegosaurs — from the Early Cretaceous of China. Had relatively low, wide plates.
- The diversity of stegosaurs in China suggests that Asia may have been a center of stegosaur evolution and diversity.
