When people think of ceratopsians (horned dinosaurs), they usually picture Triceratops and its giant relatives. But the ceratopsian family started small — with sheep-sized and even smaller dinosaurs like Protoceratops and Psittacosaurus. Protoceratops is a basal ceratopsian from the Late Cretaceous of Mongolia — one of the earliest and most primitive of the true horned dinosaurs:
- Size: 1.5-2 meters long, 0.6-1 meter tall, and 50-100 kg. About the size of a large sheep or pig.
- Frill: A well-developed but relatively short frill on the back of its skull — the beginnings of the giant frills seen in later ceratopsians like Triceratops.
- Horns: No prominent brow horns or nose horn — just a small bump on the nose. This is why it is called 'Protoceratops' = 'first horned face'.
- Beak: A strong, parrot-like beak for cropping vegetation.
- Bipedal / quadrupedal: Could walk on two legs or four — probably mostly quadrupedal but capable of bipedal movement.
- Time and place: Late Cretaceous (75-71 million years ago) of Mongolia and China. From the same famous fossil beds as Velociraptor.
- Fossil abundance: Protoceratops is known from hundreds of fossils, including complete skeletons of all ages from hatchlings to adults. It is one of the best-known dinosaurs in the world.
Psittacosaurus: The Parrot Lizard
Psittacosaurus is an even earlier ceratopsian — and one of the most primitive — from the Early Cretaceous of Asia:
- Size: 1-2 meters long, 0.5-0.7 meters tall, and 10-20 kg. About the size of a dog.
- Appearance: Parrot-like beak, long tail, bipedal posture (walked on two legs), and no frill or horns to speak of.
- Bristles/tail feathers: Fossils from China show that Psittacosaurus had long, bristle-like structures on its tail — possibly for display.
- Coloration: One exceptionally preserved fossil shows countershading (darker on top, lighter below) and camouflage patterning — we actually know what color Psittacosaurus was!
- Diet: Herbivorous — ate plants with its parrot-like beak.
- Species diversity: There are over 10 known species of Psittacosaurus from China, Mongolia, Siberia, and Thailand — making it one of the most widespread Early Cretaceous dinosaurs.
